Halkidiki’s easternmost peninsula, it’s the only place worldwide ruled by black-robed monks, famous of its medieval monasteries and for its restricted access to every women. It is the center of the Christian Orthodox religion and is commonly referred to as the “Holy Mountain”. Today over 2,000 monks live an ascetic life in the 20 Orthodox monasteries. Mount Athos is approached by ferry from Ouranoupolis or Ierissos but only men can visit this area.
